Updating Your Status (Tagline)

Open your broadcast console and enter text in the field at the top that says ‘What are you broadcasting?’ Your status will show up on your channel page.

Embedding Broadcasts

You can host a Viewer webpage, on your site outside of Ustream. This requires some HTML authoring knowledge and the ability of your site to host HTML. From [Jump To Your Show] in the upper right of the screen, select your Show from the [Go To Show] drop down menu. Under the player/viewer, click on the “Embed” tab. From the "Embed the Live Video anywhere!" text field, and click on “Copy Embed” (you can also embed Chat or Social Stream modules) and paste this into your HTML code.

Audio-Only Broadcasts

Audio-only broadcasts are possible and many Ustreamers do this. The best way is to use a 1/8th” to 1/8th” line-in to connect your audio input and output points on your computer. You will need to have these connected before you open your broadcast console. Alternatively, you can use free programs, such as Soundflower for Macs. If you have a PC, you can set your audio to stereo or wave out mix. To do so, open your volume control, go to ‘Options’, then to ‘Properties’, and make sure that ‘Wave Out’ or ‘Stereo Mix’ is checked.

Using Skype with Ustream

PC: To properly stream a Skype conversation on Ustream using a PC, you will need two mics (built-in mic on a laptop, plus an external mic; or an external mic plus a USB mic; or built-in mic plus mic on a webcam), and you will need WebCamMax which you can purchase for $30 here - http://webcammax.com/ Setup: in Skype, you set your mic to the one closest to you. To do this, click Tools -> Options -> Audio Settings. Set your speakers to the speakers in your laptop or the loudest option you have.  On Ustream, set your Audio Source to your other mic, this should be between your speakers and you. This will allow Ustream to hear you and hear your caller. To set up the Skype window on Ustream, install WebCamMax, make sure the Ustream broadcast console is closed, open WebCamMax, click Sources, set your main source to Webcam and select your camera. Then in the bottom, left click PinP Source 1, select Screen, set the mode to Specific Area. A red box should show up on your screen indicating the area that WebCamMax is capturing. Place that red box around the Skype video window and resize as needed. In the preview window on WebCamMax, move the picture-in-picture where you'd like by clicking and dragging. Launch the Ustream broadcast console, set WebCamMax as your video source, and your other mic as your audio, and you're good to go! Mac: The following link provides easy, step-by-step instructions on how to use Skype with Ustream, with the addition of a free program called Soundflower: http://educationaltechnology.ca/couros/765

NewTek Tricaster and Ustream

Configure Tricaster for your Ustream Channel

Download the Flash Media Encoder XML file associated with your Ustream channel. From your Ustream account dashboard, click 'Manage Your Show' on the left side of the screen. Choose 'Settings' and then scroll down and click 'Advanced Settings' to reveal the download link. Open the downloaded .xml fil using a basic text editor like TextEdit on a Mac or Notepad on a PC. If should contain several nested tages and values in this format: <tag>value</tag>.

The values you need to extract are located in the <url> and <stream> tags near the bottom of the file.

<output>

         <rtmp>

                <url>rtmp://1.46699547.fme.ustream.tv/ustreamVideo/46699547</url>

                 <backup_url></backup_url>

                 <stream>YKwieDYjefIDonj45hskdfg7offair</stream>

          </rtmp>

Copy these 2 values into a text file that should look like this:

rtmp://1.46699547.fme.ustream.tv/ustreamVideo/46699547

YKwieDYjefIDonj45hskdfg7offair

From here you have 2 options:

  1. Configure the Tricaster so that you will need to log into the Ustream account and open the broadcast console to make the stream live.
  2. Configure the Tricaster so it will publish directly to the Ustream channel, without logging into the account (Recommended)

Note the last 6 characters in the <stream> value: offair

If you want to do option 1, leave the text file as-is. If you want to do option 2, delete offair from the end of the stream value. Name and save you text file for future use.

Copy and paste the <url> value into the Location field on the Record/Stream tab of your Tricaster. Copy and paste the stream value into the Stream ID field. Click the 'Stream Live Output' button to begin streaming live to your Ustream channel.

Creating Custom Streaming Profiles

From Newtek FAQ  http://newtek.com/faq/?tree=true&category=97

Can I Make Custom Flash Streaming Profiles?

While NewTek, Inc. includes a wide variety of streaming profiles for TriCaster it is possible to create your own and use them inside TriCaster**. You need to have the latest TriCaster 2.5 patch in order to do this. You may download the latest TriCaster updates by logging into thedownload page on the registration site.

If you have the latest patch installed go to Administrator mode, we will first need to initialize the TriCaster video i/o drivers so they are detected by going to Start > Run. In the Open field type in newtekrtme and press OK, a DOS prompt should pop up and run through a few things: leave this open.

Now open up Flash Media Live Encoder*** (FMLE) by going to Start > All Programs > Adobe > Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3. It is normal to get a couple of errors when you launch the program, just click past them. Here all settings can be customized: bit rate, frame rate, resolution, etc. In order for it to properly use the audio and video from the TriCaster make sure the Device under the Video and Audio sections are set to VT Video Device and VT Audio Device respectively. Also set the Input Size to 720x480 (NTSC) or 768x576 (PAL). From here you may customize the other settings as you please.

For more information on the encoding options please visit Adobes help site here.

After you have finished your profile in FMLE go to File > Save Profile and navigate to here:

C: > TriCaster > User Data > Default User > StreamProfiles > FlashProfiles

You will then need to go to either the NTSC or PAL folder and from there into the 4x3 or 16x9folder and save your profile in here. Your profile must begin with "Flash" (capital "F", lower-case "lash") and may be followed by a brief name or description (you will see our examples listed here wherein we include the preset specifications). If the file is not named correctly then it will not be recognized correctly as a Flash Media profile and will appear as a Pull and Push profile as a Windows Media Encoder profile.

Once you have finished close FMLE and close the DOS prompt window (NewTekRTME) that we launched earlier. Configure your TriCaster to launch with the aspect ratio setting that corresponds to the profile you just made. You should now be able to select and stream through your custom profile under the Record & Stream tab under Live Production.

*To find out your version launch the TriCaster software and click on the ? in the top-right. In the pop-up window the last six numbers of the product ID in the lower-right corner should be 090112

**Custom profiles are not supported and could potentially cause stability or connectivity issues while running the TriCaster software

***Flash Media Live Encoder 3.0 is installed on the TriCaster, manually upgrading FMLE will cause the TriCaster to lose the ability to stream Flash

Using Multiple Cameras

The Web Broadcaster and the free Producer software will each publish from a single camera source. To incorporate mutliple camera sources (on a single machine), we recommend the Producer Pro software (US$199) There are other solutions: incorporating an external video switcher in front of a software encoder, or a standalone hardware system such as NewTek's Tricaster.

Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE) with Ustream

Adobe's Flash Media Encoder (FMLE) provides professional-quality audio and video broadcasts. FMLE is free to use and provides highly customizable encoding options for broadcasters wanting to do higher quality streams. Be aware that broadcasting higher quality streams requires a faster computer and more upload bandwidth on your network connection. To start using FMLE with Ustream, follow these instructions:

  1. Download and install Flash Media Live Encoder: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/
  2. Download your show's XML file from the Advanced Settings section of your Ustream account dashboard
  3. Launch FMLE then open your show's XML file by click "File" -> "Open Profile"
  4. Modify input and output settings as you wish.
  5. To connect directly to your Ustream channel without opening the web broadcaster from your account, delete 'offair' from the end of the Stream field.
  6. Press the Connect button below the FMS URL and Stream fields to connect to the server.
  7. Press the Start button to begin streaming live.

Adding Graphics and Other Effects

You can improve the quality of your show by using either WebCamMax (PC) or CamTwist (Mac). With these applications, you can quickly and easily add scrolling text, logos, RSS feeds, special guest windows, picture-in-picture, pre-recorded video, and several other video effects. You can also cue up images and pre-recorded videos similar to professional broadcasts.

  2. Choose to download Ustream Prodcuer for either Mac or PC from the right side.
  3. Install Ustream Producer, and launch the program.
  4. Log into Producer with your Ustream username and password.
  5. At the very bottom of Producer, choose the channel you would like to upload your video for.
  6. Drag and drop the video file into Producer.  The video will automatically begin playing back in a loop.  Begin your broadcast while the video is playing back.
  7. Once the video loops back to the beginning, click Record down in the bottom right hand corner to begin the recording.
  8. When you are finished recording the video, click the Record button to stop recording the video.  Make sure that you stop the recording before it loops back to the beginning.
  9. Enter a Title, Description, and Tags for the video, then click Save.

Audio Issues

If you are experiencing audio issues, you can adjust the record volume of your input sound device by sliding the "Broadcast Volume" bar in the broadcast window. RED means your are overloading the recording sound. You can also adjust your record volume in your computer sound settings To do this through flash, right-click on the broadcast window (ctrl and click for Macs) and select SETTINGS.

Click on the microphone icon.

Browser Keeps Crashing

There are known issues between Adobe Flash and certain cameras (like some DV cameras). To get around this, we recommend you use either Camtwist or Webcammax as they are more stable with Adobe Flash. You would have one of these programs detect your camera, then from your broadcast panel go to advanced settings, then select Camtwist or Webcammax. This should eliminate the crashing problems.

Opening Firewall Ports for Ustream

A firewall can reside on your local machine, on a corporate firewall, or both. Have your IT department configure the firewall to accommodate these settings:

WEB & VIDEO INGEST

For broadcasting and viewing:

74.217.100.0/24

199.66.236.0/22

Ports: 80, 443, 1935 Traffic type: HTTP, HTTPS, RTMP

For using IRC CHAT while viewing streams the following ports also need to be opened:

Port 843 Flash Cross Domain Security XML File

Port: 6667 Traffic type: IRC

Here are links to adjusting firewall settings on local machines:

Mac OS: http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/static_port_fwd_firewall.html

Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308127

Using High-End Capture Cards with Ustream

High-end video capture cards such as those from Digital Rapids or Osprey often have more encoding options and also do more than just encode. For example, using these cards you may be able to do the following: pre-processing on the signal, de-interlacing, color correction, cropping, applying various filters, capturing and streaming multiple feeds at once, etc.

Because the cards typically have chips specifically designed for video pre-processing and encoding, it takes some of the workload off the CPU and moves it to dedicated, optimized processors. This provides better performance and better quality video, than encoding software running on a laptop that uses all CPU resources.

Using An External Camera with Ustream Broadcast Console

1. Login to Ustream and click the "Broadcast Now" button.

2. When the broadcast console opens for the first time, it asks you if want to "Allow" or "Deny" Camera and Microphone access. Select "Allow". (If at any point you click "Deny" then the window will never show up again. When this occurs, you will have to reset it. To reset it: right-click on the video area, click "Settings", and select "Allow").

3. In the Ustream Broadcaster console, select your camera from the Video Sources drop down menu. If it is an embedded webcam then it will appear as "USB Video Class Video". If it is a plugged in DV Camera then it will appear as "DV Video".

4. Your video should appear in the Local Stream window. Make sure you have "Local Monitor" selected in the bottom left corner of the broadcast window.

5. Click "Start Broadcast" to start broadcasting and click "Start Record" to save a recording in your Ustream channel.

Configuring Sound

1. Plug in your audio device prior to opening the Ustream broadcaster window. Click "Broadcast Now" button. 2. Select your audio device from the Audio Sources drop-down menu.

a.If you have a mic plugged into the input on your computer or laptop then select "Built-in Input".

b.If you want to use the embedded webcam mic then select "Built-in Microphone".

Broadcast Looks Choppy

Potential Causes:

  1. Bandwidth: It is possible that the upload speed of your Internet connection is too slow. Check your internet connection at www.speedtest.net. We recommend an upload speed minimum of 1 to 1.5 Mbps to do a high quality broadcast.  Also, it is important that no one else is using the same internet connection for other purposes.  If you are using a shared wi-fi network, you may find you have insufficient bandwidth to broadcast. The best rule of thumb is that your broadcasting bitrate should be about 50% or less of your total available upload bandwidth.  The Ustream Web broadcaster uses less bandwidth than Ustream Producer, so if you find you are having chopiness or disconnects with Producer, you may want to try dropping it to the lowest quality setting or switching to the web broadcaster instead.
  2. CPU Usage: Your stream can become choppy if your CPU usage is so high that it causes your computer to slow down. This can affect both the broadcaster stream quality and viewer stream quality. Close all other programs that are running in the background to solve this problem. By closing other programs (like ITunes, Skype, and AIM) you will free up CPU space and help your computer run faster.
  3. Playing back large video files or encoding HD video:  If your source is a very high resolution, like an HD video clip, you may find that your computer struggles to encode this smoothly.  One trick here is to try to down-convert your clip or source video to a compressed, lower bit-rate format to see if this allows the computer to play it back and encode it more smoothly.

Stream Keeps Disconnecting

If your stream keeps disconnecting, it is likely an internet issue. Achievable speeds with internet connections fluctuate. If you do a speed test and it says 900 kbps that doesn't mean that in five minutes it won't drop down to 600. So if you set your bitrate too high, say 650, and bandwidth dips below 650 then your stream will freeze or get disconnected. We recommend leaving a good amount of buffer zone to provide continuous streaming.

    Using Chat and Social Stream

The chat room allows anyone with a Ustream account to participate. The Social Stream allows users to log into their Twitter accounts from the Ustream channel page.

If users don’t have a Twitter account, they can view the social stream but won’t be able to send Tweets. Broadcasters and viewers alike can use the Social Stream, and the feature allows users to Tweet questions to the broadcaster and will automatically generate a link back to the Ustream show page. Broadcasters can display both chat and the social stream features or one but not the other.

Broadcasters can change this setting under “Chat” (after logging in and clicking on "Go To Dashboard). Pick the channel (that you want to change the chat and social stream settings) and manage your chat/ social stream settings. To use the Ustream chat, you will need to sign up for a Ustream account and log in.

Note: You must be logged on in order to participate in the chat room. If you are not logged on, you will still be able to view the chat, but not be able to chat within the room.

    Moderating Chat Rooms

To become the moderator of a show: 1. Log into your account 2. Go to “Manage Your Show” 3. pick a show channel (that you want to change Moderators settings) and Click “Settings” 4. Under “Chat Setting” type in username of person you would like as moderator and click on their name in drop down menu 5. Click save changes 6. Once the moderator has been added, go to the channel URL

    Banned by Moderator

If you were banned from a chat room, the decision to un-ban you is up to the moderator of the chat room and not Ustream. Only the moderator of that chat can lift the ban.

    Password Protected Shows

If the stream you’re trying to watch asks for a password, it is because the broadcaster set their stream to be private.   Only the broadcaster will be able to give you access; Ustream cannot provide passwords to protected streams.
